It's All About The Audience

I went around with a questionnaire and asked a few people what sort of music they listened to and what types of brands they like etc.

Name: Kirsty
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: British
What they do for a living: Nothing
Where do they shop for food: Tesco's
Favorite brand: Nike, Adidas
Favorite place to shop: Topshop
What they do in their spare time: Going out with mates
What magazine do they read: Heat, Look
What newspaper they read: Guardian, Daily Mail, The Sun
Favorite drink: Diet Coke
Favorite genre: Pop
What transport do they use the most: Train, Bus
Where they would like to go on holiday: New York
What technology do they use: iPhone, Laptop, iPod

It's important to have a  target audience because it helps promote the songs to a wide range of people. You need to make sure you grab the target audience right at the start of the Pop stars career because that is what will help set off their popularity and promotion.

I went onto Google to check out the local fan sites that are set up for AlunaGeorge:

I came across a Facebook page set up for them:

I left this post on the page, hopefully i'll get some replies and ideas!

Gettin' Synergized...

Without meaning to sound too pretentious using a fancy Literature term, I developed the neologism (which basically means made up word) 'synergized'  to depict that act of using synergy across multiple promotional platforms. E.g. Khadeeja synergized the promotional campaign and digipacks for the release of Romy's Bad Idea. Although its pretty much all talk - it does hold some sort of weight, the point i'm trying to make essentially is that I will be incorporating several elements into the outcomes that will work as a sort of 'house style' or synergy. Therefore I am planning to synergize my outcomes, if that makes any sense...

The idea is to have a similar use of colour and font throughout all of the outcomes (Digipack, Poster, Music Video). As a group we have already decided to use bright colours, particularly I think from the more saturated end of the colour scale to give the electronic pop genre song and video an appropriate vibrant look and finish.

The main colour scheme I feel should a selection from the following;

(I'm leaning towards Electric Green, Candy Pink & Jackie Oh accompanied by black)

And as the group already decided on together out of the choices I developed digitally - the logo for Romy's album cover;

Planning- pitch

Pitch day is coming up on the 16th of October, meaning that we have to have our stuff together by then to impress the 'record label' (i.e. our media teachers) with our awesome music video pitch. However, it's a big task for one person to do be themselves so we are going to share the responsibility as a group. We spent some lesson time thinking about who was most suited to do what and we came up with the following... (apologies for the scrawly handwritting)

Audience!

To gather audience information I went around the college and asked a couple of people some questions relating to our artist and song choice. We were given some brief and general survey questions to ask people. All members of our group went out and asked different people so that we can gather up the information and compare. I asked a fellow student from my college, Isabella, who is a fan of AlunaGeorge's music and unique style. Her answers to the questions were as followed:

Age; 17
Gender; Female
Ethnicity; White, British
Describe what you may do for a living; Aspires to become an actor
Where they buy their groceries; Tesco
Describe what you do in your spare time; Shops and sings
What newspaper they read; The Guardian
What magazine(s) they read; Cosmopolitan
What form of transport they most often use; Tube (Underground)
What gadgets they use; Phone, laptop
A brand they are attracted to; Doc Martins
Where they most often buy their clothes from; American Apparel
Their favourite drink; Strawberry Ribena
Where they may like to go on holiday; USA
Why she likes AlunaGeorge; Likes the unique tone of her voice and the funky sound they produce.

From this information I gathered that Isabella is quite a creative person due to her aspirations of being an actor and one of her hobbies being singing. She also seems like a very modern teenager who's up to date with a lot of things, as she reads Cosmopolitan, uses the Tube and frequently uses her phone and laptop. I also got the feel that she's quite a trendy kind of teenager as she shops at American Apparel and likes the brand Dr Martins. Finally, I got the idea that she is definitely a keen listener of AlunaGeorge as she gives a detailed reason as to why she likes them. In order to know that she has a unique tone to her voice, someone would have to be a fan of her work and listen to her a lot. Isabella is a good example of our core audience due to all these reasons.

Costume ideas for Romy! Bad Idea music video by Slidely Slideshow

Audience, Audience, AUDIENCE!!!

Audience awareness is key when developing ideas for our music video and so I spent an extensive amount of time researching to discover what it was exactly that made the fanbase of AlunaGeorge tick, and then - what 'young people' (the wider generalised audience) would possibly expect from their music videos. Here's a powerpoint documenting my struggle...

After that I also did some research url (in real life) rather than electronically. I asked some normal teenagers a similar sort of questions and here they are;

Planning - Final Logo Choice!

After much deliberation we came to a shortlist. We were stuck between choosing one of two logo's;

We finally chose the second logo because of its striking nature as opposed to the first because it looked more typical for a pop artist. We're glad about the decision made because we feel it is more appropriate for the genre and the artist (Romy). It shows the uniqueness of the artists' sound and will work well with the digi-packs and promotional materials.

Planning- COSTUME CHOICES

We are going to try and stick to 4 costume changes.
We want to match each outfit to each of the 4 settings. (See other blog post for settings and locations)

We want to create a casual look for the first scene, an outfit that's quite homely and cosy and then in the second scene something quite casual and street like.

here are a few items of clothing we might aim our costume ideas around:

Planning- Locations, Settings and Props

We looked into out props and locations and found a motif we could go by (i.e rich colours). We decided on four locations corresponding to parts of the song - not exactly following the lyrics narrative but matching the tone of the music.

Here are our findings, note style;

The Lyrics Decoded

Since the actual song 'Bad Idea' doesn't have a music video, we can analyse the original one. However, I thought something useful I could do was decode the lyrics to see if they could contribute any ideas to the development of the final Music Video.

Here I am, talkin' bout it...

Brand Synergy...A Logo?

As a graphic design studio - the prospect of developing a brand image for the artist in the music video excites me - most particularly the 'logo' for the artist. Romy is the performer in the music video and so i will be designing one for her. Here are my initial ideas...

As a group our initial thoughts were to go with something bold as we found more pop artists use bold type for their logo's. Taking this group feedback I went on to develop more possible logo ideas.

Now all thats next is asking the group what they think!

Who Is AlunaGeorge?

Good question blog title, well - I went into some depth myself about the subject. Well I made a little video about it - however, the first thing to know I suppose is that they went unsigned for 4 years before being signed to Universal Music Publishing Group UK;
