Planning- Costume, decisionssss decisionssss

Planning: Pitch Pitch Pitch! Theories and Risks (Part 2)

THEORIES

Our music videos responds to Andrew Goodwin's theory by following the concept of the artist being the narrator and character in the music video.

The artist (Me) is singing about how her boyfriend doesn't treat her right and that she has had enough and is going to move on. This is displayed through the facial expressions i will be pulling and it will also be conveyed through the lyrics.

AlunaGeorge "Bad Idea" lyrics:

You, you, you
Pardon me, would you listen, please?
I'll keep this easy now, keep this fine
I’m gonna have to let you go
cause you've been dragging like jedward
You didn't shut it when you do should
And baby it’s a bad show
I’m gonna have to cut you loose
cause your whining is no use
It’s time to let it show,
I’m gonna have to let you go

I know you get your kicks from your messy life
Don’t follow me with your buss and stride
Your a car crash waiting to happen
I’m putting on the breaks just to save myself
You’re a bad idea that’s gone out of fashion
I’m not even gonna put you at the back of the shelf

Do ba-do do do ba-do
Keep giving me a new excuse
Do ba-do do do ba-do
I'll start giving you real abuse

Just wanna be polite,
Don’t wanna start a fight
So I’m gonna say this right first time
Baby you're bringing me down,
Pressing my buttons with your a big frown
The Situation is over,
Don't look over your shoulder

I know you get your kicks from your messy life
Don’t follow me with your fuss and stride
Your a car crash waiting to happen
I’m putting on the breaks just to save myself
You’re a bad idea that’s gone out of fashion
I’m not even gonna put you at the back of the shelf

Do ba-do do do ba-do
Keep giving me a new excuse
Do ba-do do do ba-do
I'll start giving you real abuse

Your a car crash waiting to happen
I’m putting on the breaks just to save myself
You’re a bad idea that’s gone out of fashion
I’m not even gonna put you at the back of shelf

Do ba-do do do ba-do
Keep giving me a new excuse
Do ba-do do do ba-do
I'll start giving you real abuse

Your a car crash waiting to happen
I’m putting on the breaks just to save myself
You’re a bad idea that’s gone out of fashion
I’m not even gonna put you at the back of shelf

Do ba-do do do ba-do
Keep giving me a new excuse
Do ba-do do do ba-do
I'll start giving you real abuse

The lyrics talk about how the boyfriend is going nowhere maybe with his career or in our interpretation with the relationship. He doesn't put enough effort in or pay much attention to the artist.

I think the artist being the narrator and the character appeals to the audience because it can help them relate to the lyrics and the situation that the song is talking about. They can all relate to having a lousy relationship in the past etc.

RISK ASSESSMENT:

This is probably one of the most important parts of the pitch because its all about the safety of the group and the well being of the equipment that we are going to use.
In order to minimize risks such as damage to equipment of damage to the anyone in the group we are going to make sure that whenever we aren't using the equipment it will be safely put away in its case to help prevent scratches or marks or dents being put into them. For the safety of the group, we are making sure that we film in areas that are used often, so that we don't get lost of injured from things. To stop any of us getting lost we are going to plan our journeys ahead so that we know how to get there and back safely.

The possibly dangers we could face whilst filming are
- equipment being stolen
- people trying to get the equipment off of us
- being in places that are secure (derelict buildings etc)
- being somewhere late at night
- getting lost

Planning: Pitch Pitch Pitch! Song Choice and Costume Decisions (Part 1)

For our pitch as a group i have been assigned to pitch the song choice, costume decisions, Andrew Goodwin's theory and the risk assessment.

SONG CHOICE:

Me, Khadeeja and Luke all had song ideas so in order to come to an immediate conclusion we listened to each song suggestion taking into consideration how we could make the video look good, what shots we could use, what colors etc.

The song choices were:

Luke - "Inside Each Other" by Delilah (remix)
Khadeeja - "Bad Idea" by AlunaGeorge
Me - "Only You" by Delilah

After listening to all three songs we discussed how we could interpret the music into a video, we also paid attention to the lyrics and how they could be shown in the video. Unfortunately Luke's song was the first to be knocked off the list because we all felt like it was too of an intense song plus the lyrics were slightly provocative which would of been difficult to portray in a video meant for a target audience of teenagers and young adults (some might of found the video too provocative so we had to make sure our final song choice was suitable for everyone in the target audience).

We then listened to the songs a second time round, again taking into consideration the settings, mise-en-scene and costume etc.
We couldn't come to a decision so we decided to get one of the teachers involved because we felt like an unbiased opinion would help us choose the right song.

and then we FINALLY came to the decision that "Bad Idea" by AlunaGeorge would be our song!
We thought it was a good choice because it was upbeat, current and it had a very urban feel to it. The beat was also catchy and easy to dance to (because we are including dancing in our video).

COSTUME:

On Wednesday (9th October) we all came in with costume ideas:

We have chosen 2 outfits for me - an outfit for the first living room scene and an outfit for the second street scene.

We have also chosen 2 outfits for Luke so far.

More work on outfits and makeup will happen tomorrow (Friday 11th October)

Synergy Sturf

How Do You Synergize?!

Of course 'synergize' isn't a real word however it is the closest word that can explain what i mean when it comes to synergy.

Synergy is a big part of promoting an artist. The synergy could be anything from a certain hairstyle (e.g Amy Winehouse had an up do whenever she went out and they featured in a lot of her music videos). Another example of synergy is Disclosure using the image of a drawing of a face in their music video and on their album.

For my coursework me and my group will be producing 3 products.

The 3 products we will be creating are:
- Music video

- Poster promoting the artist
- Digi Pack
I am going to incorporate synergy into each of these things by using the artist's logo/label which is
we chose this logo out of a selection of others because we thought this one looked simple yet unique and we also thought it looked very modern which is what we are aiming for.

How have music videos inspired our planning?

As a group we decided that since AlunaGeorge are quite an urban electronic English group that it would be good idea to keep the scenes urban and interesting with bright colors and lots of scenery i.e graffiti.

Mise-en-scene is probably one of the main things that our group wanted to make sure we got right. We wanted the costumes to be very eye catching and trendy in order to get our target audience (teenagers and young adults) to want to either buy the outfits or to be able to relate to them (i.e they have the same shorts or they would wear the outfits in the video).

Editing is also very important when it comes to making music videos. We want the shots to be smooth with a few jump cuts that go along with the beat of the song. We are also going to be using fast and slow motion in order to stick to the typical editing effects that are used in all music videos. Slow/Fast motion effects help keep the video interesting and it can also be used along with the beat of the song (makes it eye catching and easy to listen to).

Our Camerawork is going to consist of a lot of moving shots (this is typically used in music videos) because like with the fast and slow motion it adds character to the music video and keeps it interesting throughout.  We will be using a small amount of static shots possibly for when the dancers are being filmed however this might change because when it comes to filming it might make more sense for the camera to also be moving along with the dancing.

Here are 3 music videos that inspired our mise-en-scene, editing and camera idea's...

1) "White Noise" by Disclosure ft AlunaGeorge:

The graffiti in the background of this video is something that our video is also going to include. I feel like the graffiti will make the background more interesting and urban which will also create a scene that the audience could relate to. \The outfits in the video are quite casual, very much like the kind of clothes people wear now.

2) "Burn" by Ellie Goulding:

I like how bright this video is, even though its a very simple layout the bright lights stand out and make the video pretty and create a positive image. Ellie Goulding only changes costume twice but i think this is down to the fact that the scenery rarely changes in this video. Obviously my group will have more then 2 scenery changes in order to keep the video interesting throughout.

3) "Big When I Was Little" by Eliza Doolittle:

This video is full of bright colors which creates a fun atmosphere to the music video. I feel as if our music video is going to have a few aspects of Eliza Doolittles video (the bright bold colors) mixed with Ellie Goulding's edgy but casual look along with the graffiti background in the disclosure video. Combing long, medium and close up shots along with the added effect of fast and slow motion will make my groups video fun, interesting and up to date with the music videos that are around today.

Planning: Pitch- Social Media

I have set up a Twitter and Instagram account to notify the teachers of where my group and I will be filming; making it safer for us. We will also be uploading photos of us in pre-production and during the filming.

Planning- Why our final song choice?

I can't find the lyric video for AlunaGeorge's song Bad Idea on Youtube anymore, it seems like the owner has put the video down.

https://soundcloud.com/alunageorge/bad-idea

At the start when I was  given the task to find a music video by a British artist for my group make a video to I found the task challenging for many reasons because I don't listen to music as much as regular teenagers do, also I wasn't familiar with British artists however I knew that I was inclining to tense, soul music for instance Adele, Emeli Sande, Corrine Bailey Rae... etc.

When I was searching up British artists I did find a singer called Nina Nesbitt and  her song No Interest and I was quite fond of doing a re-make of the video. I quite enjoyed her songs and music videos and I found that I drifted from soul to pop music videos and that is where my group comes in!

My group  came up with 3 music videos, Khadeeja came up with Bad Idea by AlunaGeorge, Romy with  Only You by Delilah and Luke was interested in Inside Each Other by Delilah (remix). At this time I wasn't too sure of the music video I thought we should do and wanted to see what ideas and music genres they had in mind I never knew we were going to decide on that very day!

Since I had only had Nina Nesbitt in mind but purely because she was the only one British pop singer that I thought wouldn't be as challenging to do. I still wanted to search for more British artists however as my group likes to be advanced than the other groups we decided on that very day that we were going to do Bad Idea by AlunaGeorge through countless discussions and even Trevor came in and picked out key elements we could include on the making of the video as well as how it differed from the other two songs. Additionally, Khadeeja's argument managed to win over and convince everybody, that girl has great persuasive and convincing skills I tell you!

The Lift Pitch

Our class pitch is coming up soon and part of it is to give a summary of our music video idea. So to best illustrate this I thought it would be a good idea to film a mock 'lift pitch'. Basically, the group will film a scenario where a member of the group comes into contact with a big time music video producer and tries to convince them to produce their music video in twenty seconds, the entire thing taking place in an actual lift. It will be a great opener to our pitch, good enough to catch the attention of the pitch audience.

Costume ideas!

So for our music video I'm going to be playing the idiot and not-so-loyal boyfriend... Joy. I thought as I don't have the main role, and my character is meant to be quite general and a typical boy, that I should wear some quite normal and casual clothing. Here's some outfits that I thought would best suit the video...

Living room costume- I thought this one should be pretty casual and non-caring as my character is just sitting at home playing video games, chilling out etc.

Shorditch Alley- This is quite a trendy yet casual area and scene so I thought I should base my costume purely on this.

Picnic scene- As I'm on a picnic with my loving girlfriend (lol) I thought as smart-casual costume would fit this scene.

Mile end skatepark- As its the end scene I thought I should wear some colourful, but still casual clothing which doesn't stand out too much.

5, 6, 7, 8...

Me and Romy got some sweat and bruises from our extra gal pal time! What that means is we got together to work on some of the dance movement and choreography for the music video, we also did some test shots of her lipsyncing with the camera. Here are the fruits of our labour!

Last summer video...

Here's a belated post of my embarrassing music video from last year!

Here's the Digipak I made to go along with it-

Music videos that have influenced our final plan...

Research skills...

I think my research skills have definitely improved since last year. I think this is mainly because we've gone straight into the coursework, which evidently means that I've had to work really hard from the start of the year and do a lot of research into music videos myself, as we have not been taught as much on this topic than we had on the thriller film project.

On the other hand, the fact that I have been blogging and researching since last year, I think its been made easier as I've already got that experience on how to blog and how to keep up with timing, although at the moment I still need to blog a bit more than I am at the moment.

Makeup ideas...

I'm not a makeup artist but I like to try out different eyeshadow looks and what not from time to time so I thought I would try out some looks for the music video:

The thick eyeliner is used a lot by singers and I thought it was quite a staple look that could work

More to come!

Costume ideas

Looking through my wardrobe I realised that I didn't have many bright coloured pieces of clothing however I managed to find a few clothes that could potentially work in the music video.

I put together a few outfits:

felt as if one of these outfits could work with the street scenes. I think that they are quite casual but also stylish and even though they are quite basic outfits, they are also something that most teenagers would wear.

The next few outfits I thought might work for the chorus sections of the music video, again they aren't too dressy however I think they would stand out to the more casual outfits:

These outfits could maybe work for any of the scenes:

Obviously these outfits might not nessicarly be used in the music video but I'm going to discuss it with my group on Wednesday.

Contributions to Costume

So, since the video is supposed to be very pop-like and colourful - I feel like I may fall short in my ability to contribute due to my personal boho style (I own predominantly cream clothing. I am not ashamed). Nevertheless I managed to dig up some stuff that I feel may be of use to the group if needed.

Planning - Setting's IRL (In Real Life)
