Digipak Template (Excuse The Bad Drawing)

this is the front cover of my digipak
this is a close up of the front of the digipak cd cover, im not sure if im going to use this image for the front cover however because im not looking into the camera so there is a lack of connection with the artist and the audience.

this is a close up of the back of my digipak. The back image is from a different

this is the inside of my digipak.

i will be putting the tracklist and how long they all are on this panel.

Ideas for my digipakk

The Pièce de Résistance...

As part of my digipack there is a booklet of photographs featuring Romy, without further ado - here it is!

Working on my Ancillary Sturff

So I began work on my digipack almost immediately after mapping out the general look (mostly out of excitement but partly because leaving things in media is a BAD idea). I began work on the finished project in Photoshop as follows:

The Settings...

I start by choosing the settings for the project. I choose a basic shape (A3 Sheet of paper) because I know an actual digipack would fit onto the size of an A3 sheet. I name the project something suitable. I change the colour mode to CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and K for Black) because it is the colour mode you use for printed documents, and a digipack is printed. I make the project 16bit to increase the quality and i stop photoshop from colour managing so that they don't mess around with my chosen colours (photoshop likes to do that).

The Guidelines

I continued to create guidelines for where the digipack would go. I made the dimensions 13cm by 13cm to give the digipack a little room with a 6mm spine for the slip cover. The slip cover has two panels and the inside digipack has 3 panels because it flips outwards.

The Photos

As we all know, famous pop stars and movie stars get 'photoshopped', especially for posters and album covers. Romy, being the superstar she is, receives the exact same treatment. Using a tool called 'liquify' I slim down some of Romy's proportions and smooth over some of her blemishes (simply for the digipack - Romy is beautiful the way she is). I then went to her hair and thickened the ends out a little more using the clone stamp tool. I also highlighted some of her roots and made them more blonde-like using the brush tool (set to the overlay feature).

 More Details…

One of my favourite colouring tools in Photoshop is 'Adjust Curves'. It brings up a colouring map where you can drag the colour curve to achieve darker or lighter images. It does much more than the brightness and contrast slider and does it naturally so that the image looks like it was actually taken at that lighting. Using such a life saving tool I lightened Romy's image for CD cover quality.

Once I began creating the actual digipack nothing could stop me. I was a graphic designer on wheels! (I was also listening to a very inspirational album that helped me along quite a bit). I went on to create the rest of the slip cover using a triangle pattern I made myself after being inspired by Romy's top. I also added a barcode, copyright information and company logo's to give the Digipack an official look.

Other Images:

After beginning work I am feeling very confident in the overall design idea I had to start with. I feel my digipack looks professional and very appropriate for the genre it is meant to represent. I look forward to creating the rest of my ancillary work with the same enthusiastic attitude!

Plans for my Digipack

FRONT PANEL OF DIGIPACK

Here is the limited edition slip cover for the digipack. It will be mostly monochrome with pops of colour, mainly coming from Romy and small accents.

INSIDE PANELS (3 PANELS: BOTH SIDES)

The inside will follow the same theme as the outer slip cover with the colour scheme etc. However the inside panels will encourage more spontaneous pops of colour imitating the colour on Romy's top (she is wearing a multicoloured top in the photos and I will use the eyedropper tool to select the colours).

 ANCILLARY WORK: POSTER

The poster will follow the same theme colour wise (mainly for consistency and the development of a house style). It will feature ratings from music magazines and appropriate information for the target audience (release date and available for digital download on iTunes). I may also include google play as a download source and a QR code because of easy accessibility.

Production - Starting The Digipak

This is what i have so far in terms of the digpak. i really like the colour scheme i have going on because i think it looks bright and i feel like it could attract peoples attention from far away.

Theres along way to go but i have a good feeling about my digipak and I'm excited to see how i can improve it! :)
I will be doing little updates on how my digipak is coming along so be on the look out for that!

Laters.
Romy :)

The Images I Decided To Use For My Digipak

So the template that i drew up and put on the blog isn't actually what my digipak is going to look like and this is because the images i wanted to use didnt look professional enough and i feel like because i wasn't looking into the camera there was a lack of communication between myself as the artist and the audience that would buy the album.
I chose the image below to use as my front cover image because i think that the eye contact that i have with the camera creates a good amount of connection and would draw more people in because i would be looking at them. I think that the close up is good and the angle of the shot isn't too low down and i really like the colours in the background because they are bright and fit in with the colour scheme that my group decided to stick to.

This image is going to be on the front of the digipak along with the name of the artist and the album title.

The back of the digipak is going to be have a block baby blue colour on it with the list of the albums songs over the top of it. I'm also obviously going to add other pieces of information like the copyright information and the label that the artist is signed to and the barcode.

This image is going to be used on the inside of the digipak covering both panels. I am going to turn down the opacity on the imge so that it fades out a bit because i am going to put a light blue colour over the top of the image but i want to keep the image visible so that the inside of the digipak looks a lot more interesting.

Thoughts on the 4th Evaluation Question…

The fourth evaluation question requires us to consider audience feedback, with this in mind, on the day of the music video premiere I went prepared with a flip cam to document some feedback. Here are my raw findings and some initial thoughts on them…

I Went To A Premiere!

Well… a music video premiere for all the A2 students and their music videos (but it still counts). Here's a video documenting all the fun!

Some Idea's For My Digipak

this is probably my favourite image and i will probably choose this as my background image.
i quite like this image because of how close up it is, however im not looking into the camera so i dont feel like i connect with the audience enough.

this was potentially going to be at the back of the digipak, because it is the back of my head i feel like it would work and make sense to be t the back of the digipak. I think im going to use this image for the inside of the digipak.
Initially i wanted this  image to be at the front of my digipak however i have been having second thoughts because im not looking into the camera i feel like it stops me connecting with the audience or the person that would pick up the album. I think i will probably end up putting it on the inside of the digipak.

This image is a definite NO to being on the front of back cover of the digipak. i look tiny and very unfocused in this image and the background looks very large because of how far away the image was taken.

I also like this image because its very colourful and has an urban background so it helps fit in with the genre of the song. i wouldnt use this as a front cover image though because im not looking into the camera and i dont feel like its a good enough close up of my face.

i also like this image and i might use this as the back of the digipak instead.

Audience Feedback...

Let's Go To The Movies!

Firstly I think a MASSIVE well done is in order to every one of the media students this year! The music videos were incredible and I had soo much fun watching them all!

Secondly, WELL DONE GROUP 21! We smashed it guys!

Here's a short video of todays events!

Looking at some past ancillary work...

So to get a good idea of the kind of level that I should be aiming at for my ancillary work, I looked at some past students work that was particularly eye catching. This artists name is Nathan Miller...

I really liked these outside panels as they have a kind of futuristic feel to it, but still manages to maintain that level of professionalism as it looks like a real Digipak that could be sold in shops. More specifically, I really like the black and white/cartoon type effect that is put on the picture of him, along with the framing of the picture as it's very well centred. Another thing I particularly liked is the headphones around his head and the drawn out purple outline, I think it gives it a really futuristic feel and that's what this student was aiming for. The text 'I AM ELECTROPOP' goes hand in hand with the design as well and suits the genre of Electropop. In terms of the back panel, I really like the square design and the colours used as it looks really good with the front cover as it shows some consistency in terms of the purple. Also in terms of the general conventions of a Digipak it has all the right features e.g. barcode, copyright, record label etc.

I really the left panel on this as the photo is really good quality, and I also think the futuristic pattern/shape goes really well and shows consistency with the theme of the Digipak. I also like the layout of the tracklist, but I would say that the copyright text is a bit too closely placed to the tracklist so it makes it look altogether. For the second panel, I like the consistency of the CD design in relation to the back panel on the outside of the Digipak, although in terms of the size of the CD itself, it looks a bit too small hence making that panel look slightly disproportionate.

The advert shows a consistent relation to the Digipak in terms of the design and layout, I think the font used for the information is very clear and works well with the green and the white. What I like the most is the simplicity of it but the fact that it's still effective, I think this is heavily down to the strong colour scheme and the fact that there aren't too many colours so it's not too in your face.
